We started under a clear sky past Roundy Park Settlement up to Broad
Down where looking back we were greeted by a wonderful orange moon
accompanied by glittering stars. Then down to the waterfall at Sandy Hole
for a warm drink. Despite recent weather the ice around the waterfall
was not as plentiful as it has been on previous winter visits. It was
then back via the Beehive hut, Hartland Tor and via the fields by the
runway of lights at Hartyland for a reviving beverage at the East Dart,
where they have beer brewed for them specifically which was enjoyed by two
of our number.

So out from Prewley with a cold east wind blowing hard. Dry underfoot with icy patches to dodge. Round the glaciated cwm and up to Shelstone. On and up Corn Ridge to find the aircraft crash site. Lots of molten aluminium around at this sad place. Heading down to the points we meet other walkers sheltering from the wind. They had just enjoyed one of those rather expensive new magic real coffee drinks and it certainly smelt very nice. After a cuppa in the lee, over to Sourton to explore the odd wall like feature - just what is it? Then skippy down to the cars and to the F&H.

So out we trod with patches of snow remaining. No wind at all so quite remarkably warm. Down past Whiteworks and over the Strane. Across to Swincombe works; on the way many walls and barbed wire to surmount. Near the works a remarkable set of three standing stones - worth another look. To the works and up to the disused leat to the wall for a cuppa. Onwards to Childe's Tomb then to find that very elusive path that heads down, down to the mire. Unerringly to the bridge and circuitously to the crossing point. But, the very special polypipe cross has disappeared and is in urgent need of replacement. Up and back to the ever reliable Plume. Where much discussion took place on the day's news, something about a budgie for an expiring nation. But still, we are all looking forward to getting our pennies back for all the wallop we have put away over the years.

Never mind I came for a walk so off I go. Within minutes I realise
what a remarkable evening it is. It is cold with a light wind and the air
is as clear as I have ever seen it. The multitude of stars are as bright as
lights and there is the tiniest slither of a new moon above the horizon.
Once up on the Tors all the lights from the hamlets and villages of mid and
north Devon are twinkling away up to the north coast. Why is no one else here
sharing this amazing evening?

Out the five went up the Swincombe. At the little reservoir thanks was
given that it did not turn into the vast lake that many wanted. Along
Wheal Emma leat to the Newtake wall then up to Mount Misery where consideration was given to the derivation of this bleak name. On to Ter
Hill crosses where one was found to be the wrong way round. Down along
Broad Down to the cars and on to the Forest Inn where the new management
was found to be jolly and the food fine.
WW 6th March 2013
Out we set on a dry, dry night. The stars were shining bright as we left the Dew Pond and up to Sharpitor. The cool east wind reminded us it was still winter as we dove down past Lether to shelter. Round up Raddick to the last of the trees to drink our tea. Then out to Crazy Well Pool as the clouds came in - even the mast disappeared. Onwards to Cramber that appeared from the grey. Down, of course past the hairy stone - will it be this year? Up to Hart and across to Black before heading back through all the fuzz bushes we could find. A little late so a rush to the Burrator but the chairs were on the tables so to the ever reliable Rock for a cooling pint.
