Nobody firing stuff on Willsworthy range so we were able to make good use of their mud-free roads on an unusually mainly-dry morning.
We went over White Tor and up to Hare in a most leisurely manner. Here were elevenses accompanied by a fierce but short hail storm.
Tavy Cleave Tor and Ger Tor were next and then down through Hamlyn's Newtake and back across the range to the cars.
We were fortunate to have our personal military advisor in attendance to explain the why's, wherefore's and whatnot's of the various bits and pieces of hardware we encountered - very interesting!
The Mary Tavy Inn provided lunch. It must now be deservedly vying with the PoW as the most welcoming pub in our programme.

Perfect Dartmoor Weather for a Perfect Dartmoor Walk. Out with the good old map and compass to find all the interesting places from the Fox and Hounds. Up to Brat and on to the lovely lintel at Wheal Frederick for a cuppa. We must have had a few cuppas there sheltered behind that gable. Then up to Chat which did rise above us as promised. And round to Dick's Well before finding the track to Arms. The Lyd was not too busy as we wend back to the Fox for a jar.

And it did snow. Real snow, first it was rain, then it sort of went a bit haily then, yes, real snow to crunch in up to North Hessary. The wind had eased and the moon was shining as we set off from Four Winds. Out to see the stone rows before turning the wall end to the railway line. Round as the storm came in before heading to Foggintor for a cuppa. Where there was a real puzzle. The rain had turned from dots into dashes - what is that all about? Up, up to find the snow and look over snowy Princetown. Past Hollow to the cars and the Whitty.

Old Pine
Stands at Doe Tor Farm
Watching
As the wind roared
And the rain poured
Watching over us
As we made our way
On a truly wonderful Dartmoor Day
A day when you just have to be there
To feel the wind and rain
Out and back
Past the old familiar places
Where we have been in the sun
And the cold
To see the water pour
Was it harder into the wind
Or with the wind behind?
Who knows
But there we were
Out and in it
Just as it should be

WW 5th February 2014

A nice warm welcome
Even though it was well 1015
And no one had been there all night
So we sat by the ebbing wood burner
And talked of what had been
How we had strolled out and up the Colly Brook to see the waterfalls
Plodged along and through the fields to Lower Godsworthy
Out onto the open moor
Where the weather turned so bad someone had to put their trousers on
To lonely Stephen's Grave
Then the track, right out to the magnificent Longstone
Before turning into the gentle rain and up to White
To find shelter for a cuppa
Down, down, to the froggy track
Before beetling past Boulter's
To the Peter Tavy - Nice

You really do have to be there ...
