WW 26th April 2017
Yes, we could, still get through although the signing seems to be slowly disappearing. Emmets Post is well gone, into storage so they say. Out on a crisp, sunny evening with a big black cloud disappearing over the South Hams. To find the narrowest of gaps though the china clay works to Luxton Tor. Onward with fine views over Plymouth to the magnificent Hawks Tor to ponder just how the shepherd's shelter was built. The 'H' stones remain a mystery so along to Collard Tor. Hemerdon mine is growing and growing and the huge solar array stood out in the setting sun. We did not dig but did wonder just what was worth digging for. Round and down to RAF Hawks Tor just in time for a cuppa and a superb sighting of Iridium 7 in a clear, clear sky. Neatly round and by the star signs to pick our way through the gap and back to the cars. Some then went to the Rock, another went somewhere else...
TWW 25th April 2017
Now that really was amazing, we were there and we still do not believe it. Out on a bright, warm, sunny day, bowling along over our moor, and then, from nowhere at all, a great big black cloud, and then out of nowhere at all it started to snow, yes really, really snow, proper snow, that lay by the roadside. I mean, we were there, and we still do not believe it.
So, to Holne Brake and down to the River Bovey to be welcomed by the truly wonderful Packsaddle Bridge with the water gleaming in the sunshine. Flowers everywhere; bluebells, yellow archangel, vetches, stitchwort, campions, herb robert and all and the beautiful spotted orchids as well. Round to wander the back lanes of Lustleigh, a true delight. To the church and on to the orchard for a cuppa where the children played and the May Queen's chair awaited. Round by the amazing stone filled gardens and down through the woods to the bridge again. A slight up to the cars and on to a very welcoming Kestor Inn.
A proper nice walk!
WW 19th April 2017
Starting from Harford Moor Gate we walked back down the road past the church to Harford Bridge and then through the gate to follow the river. A climb up through some rough ground to get to Tristis Rock just as the sun was about to disappear. On and upwards to Hillson's House. Then a direct route east to the River Erme. As we reached the steep bit down it was noticed that Cassie (the dog) had gone missing (she has done this before). Kevin decided to go back to Hillson's House to try and find her. We continued down and crossed the river just north of Piles Copse. As we started to go up Cassie appeared! Around Piles Corner and on to Sharp Tor. We could see Kevin's head torch below but couldn't communicate with him - except by a series of flashes. We met up with him near Piles Gate and he was reunited with Cassie who was put on the lead. A direct route back to the car park and on to the very accommodating Cornwood Inn.
or ...
Not onto the moors as usual but back down the lane to Harford Bridge.
Followed the lovely path along the Erme then up up through rough ground to Tristis rock to see the sun sinking. On to Hillsons house confused only by the arrangement of gates. The last of the colour in the sky, then down down down to the Erme, easily crossed, then up up to Sharp Tor and thence back to the cars in time for a swift pint in Cornwood.
Generally considered to be a fine walk and no mention of the lost item!
TWW 18th April 2017
Thanks for a really lovely walk and hope you are feeling a lot better very soon.
A wonderful part of the moor especially on a sunny day with an encouraging north easterly. Past all the fantastic manor houses to Teigncombe. And gently up to Kestor to admire the rock basin - just a little bit scary for Doctor Who fans. Onwards to Middle and Frenchbeer and across to Thornworthy, where the logan might have moved, for a sheltered cuppa. We did mange to find those Three Boys and scientifically proved it is bigger than you might think. The Long Stone and amazing stone rows took us down to the Teign where students were studying little squiggly things. The Tolmen provided a perfect picnic stop and an opportunity for those in need to be cleansed. Round to the tor and the circle, over the clappers, by Batworthy Corner and Round Pound to the cars. What a nice walk.
WW 12th April 2017
Time for beautiful evening sunsets. Lowery Cross and over our lovely new railway bridge. To follow the trackbed out onto the moor. Up and round to the Dew Pond and over Sharpitor. Lether Tor traverse was a must and Little Lether a nice place for a cuppa. Down to the leat and along, with excellent timing, to leave the woods to see the space station wend its way across the horizon. Back to the cars and to wonder just where all that mud has gone. Don't suppose we will see it again for a long, long time. The Burrator had plenty of room for a pint.
TWW 11th April 2017
Just three of us for the walk today from the Fox and Hounds. Out to Nodden Gate and along the old tramway to the points and up towards Great Links Tor. We arrived at the River Lyd and decided to visit the crash site in Tiger Marsh just a short distance away. A lot more wreckage has become exposed since we were last here - the white bits in the photo are aluminium which was melted in the heat. From here it was over Gren Tor before re-joining the tramway. Across to Great Links, then Dick's Well and down between Brat and Arms Tor to the ford below Nodden Gate.
WW 5th April 2017
A really beautiful evening, blue skies, a moon and a nice cooling northerly. To set out from the Scout Hut. Round Edward's Path to the warren as the sun gently set. The pillow mounds quite dramatic in the low light. Over the weir and across to Shavercombe Tor following the rabbit tracks. The pretty falls with all their ferns and then on and up to Hen Tor for the brilliant evening sky. A cuppa then gently down to pause and admire the ISS sailing over. Somehow it did manage to just miss Sirius. Over the leat and ford and back to the cars. The Royal Oak was busy and welcoming, perhaps opening hours have stretched now Spring is here. They were there but no musicians or singers ...
TWW 4th April 2017
Well, Spring certainly has sprung and the chestnut is breaking out.
Out from Dartmeet on a most pleasant, cool morning. To follow the East Dart and on to Sherwell where the Devon reds shone and the ducks roamed. Up to Cathanger for a nice cuppa and nice views. Corndon cairns and Tor called then down past Cave Penny. Up by the Money Pit to Yar to enjoy the snaily path. The coffin stone led us back to the cars and lunch. Where the peacock was proudly displaying.
