WW 29th May 2019
The mist was gently down on the tops on a mild evening - shouldn't cause too many navigation problems. But could that really be the cannon on the north ridge of Tryfan? And the magic View Ranger definitely showed we were on Ben Nevis!
From Lane End after the rain had stopped to wind up the leat to the take off. To take a nice winding track gently up the slope to Tavy Cleave Tor as a cuckoo flew across. Onward to seek out Hare and some shelter for a nice cuppa. Avoiding the pixies we managed to make our way down by Ger and back to the cars. Not been to the Elephant's Nest for a good time, a nice fire in the grate and a warm welcome for a cooling pint of Proper Job.
A fine evening to be out and about on our lovely moor.
TWW 28th May 2019
Well it was quite a struggle, and we nearly failed in our mission, but with a huge collective effort we finally managed to complete the task!
From Wembury on a beautiful late Spring day with a cooling westerly and clouds scudding by. The fleet was in the bay so we felt well secure as we headed east. On the coastal path with views afar encouraged an early stop for a cuppa. Diving down to the ferry, neatly back up the hill and somewhat wandery to find the path not on the map. Through Clitters Wood and gently up to admire Wembury House and the amazing, if rather unkempt, walled garden. Tracking back through Wembury proved tricky as houses have been built everywhere and the nice footpath through the field seems to have disappeared. Down to the beautiful church, to the cars and on to the Odd Wheel. Where a most superior lunch arrived in double quick time.
A very nice day out.
TWW 21st May 2019
Wonderful,
ideal weather had been ordered. Dry,
sunny with a nice cooling breeze. The
committee eventually convened, dodging the hoards as that there Park had
advertised the blue wonders and the whole world and his (white haired) wife had
arrived. The route was decided and off
we went to check that the tadpoles, newts and leeches were still there. On to Smallacombe rocks for a cuppa and to
admire the views, far and wide, of blue.
We then
headed off down the hill only to discover we had mislaid one of our four legged
friends. Search and rescue were dispatched and when found the committee
reconvened again and route number 4 (or was it 5) decided on. Straight there we said – several damp and
prickly minutes later I knew it was not a good day to have decided to wear
shorts!
Eventually
our goal was reached and they were wonderful, even better than last year, a
great sea of blue with the obligatory orange roof in the middle.
Onwards and
upwards, with some of us doing an impersonation of creeping sheep. Back to the
cars and on to the Rugglestone for a lovely lunch in the sunny garden.
WW 15th May 2019
I waited, I waited and I waited! Shall I go home and pretend or shall I do the decent thing.
Up through the quarrying rubble and cast offs and up to Hollow Tor where the sheep were having a scratch and finding a place to rest. On then to Rundlestone Tor looking up towards the imposing mast. If it toppled now,was I far enough away or would I have to run!
Walking back down towards the car this strange object was spied, not difficult it's orange!
A well disguised secret underground tunnel leading to the top secret radio station perhaps?
On down for a quick look at Westmead quarry, all's well, and to the safe where the dynamite was stored! Many a tale there!!
Back to the car, pub alone or home alone?
Mmmm
TWW 14th May 2019
What a super time of year to go for a walk round Meldon. Sun shining bright and views far, far and wide. Up from the car park and along admiring all the wonderful trees and flowers. Down by the secret path and over the bridge where the wire has been cut to the West Okement. Round the reservoir to find the new picnic spot for a cuppa. By the dam and down to the quarry and woods. Lots and lots to see as the early Spring flowers are hanging on. Round underneath the viaduct and over the bridge to head gently upward. The banks full of vetch and lots of others. To the Fox and Hounds for a nice lunch and lashes of chips.
Nice!
WW 8th May 2019
Of course that rain never came. And with all this nice cool weather the Meavy bluebells are still in full bloom. Out from the Green and by the school to Yeo where a huge oil beetle was well spotted. Up and into the fantastic woods where the bluebells are as wonderful as ever. A tad early but a beautiful spot to rest for a cuppa. Out to Sheepstor where the new house is almost finished. Round to Joey's Lane where one of the famous Burrator black rabbits ran across the road.By where the woods once stood and down to Longstone to explore the threshing floor. Very carefully we crept through the gate to the forbidden lands. Out and round by the improved path, over both dams and down to The Royal Oak - which was surprisingly quiet.
TWW 7th May 2019
Surprisingly cool; very pleasant weather for a walk. From High Down and over a very low Lyd by the stepping stones. Round by the memorial and steadily up to Doe where the flag was flying. Down to the ford to Wheal Frederick for a nice cuppa - the gable end still stands ... Into the fantastic gerts and roundily up to the real, proper Dick's Well which was quite dry. Back by the track in a cool breeze to the Mary Tavy Inn where our table was set and nice lunches arrived.
They say rain is on the way but it is very hard to believe.
WW 1st May 2019
A lovely sunny evening to be out for a short stroll. With most "Up North" there were only likely to be two of us, but, there in the carpark, two more waited. Serious stuff !! Proper walk and less pub required. Much chuckling.
With the still warm sun on our backs we headed east and on to the track by Sunnyside. Down towards the Blackabrook , past the cement rendered bridge of unknown origins , and on to the boggyish footpath avoiding the slaty blue bog violets. With Prince Hall ahead we turned right over the steel stepped stile and up the lower slopes of Royal Hill. Cuppa was had in the last of the sun's rays before heading up to Crock of Gold. Another cist was admired enroute and soon we were marching along Conchies Road , through Bull Park and along the wide leat with sheep " leap " structures and heavy flapping herons. Up left through the gate, assistance given to reunite leat separated lamb and its mum and then towards the bright lights of Princetown.
A quiet newly smartened Prince of Wales awaited and talk turned to elections, politics and the "B" word !
